Learn To Make Tissue Pom Poms {Tutorial @ ReMarkableHome.net}

As promised, here is my little tutorial for tissue pom poms! They really are easy to do, especially these little ones.

Step 1. Get your layers of tissue.  The width of your tissue determines how big your ball will be.  For my St. Patrick’s Day banner, I used 7” tissue squares.  Typically, you use a rectangle…don’t ask me why I did squares.  The longer your rectangle, the fuller your ball will be.  You will need several layers of tissue.  For these I used 8 layers, but for a bigger ball I’d use 10 or 12.  Try to lay them out with the corners matched up.  Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect.IMG_1098

Step 2.  Accordion fold your tissue paper.  If you’re using rectangular tissue, start from the short end.  The size of your accordions depends on the size of your ball.  For these little guys my folds were about 1/2”.  For a 12” ball I’d probably do about an inch.  It doesn’t have to be perfect.  If your last fold isn’t the same size, don’t worry.  It will be fine.
IMG_1099

Step 3. Use scissors to trim the ends. I trimmed mine round here, which makes for a flowery look.  You can also trim into a point, which looks more spiky.  You could even cut into it in a V.  Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
IMG_1100

Step 4. Fold it in half to find the center.  Then use some wire or string to tie around the center.  If you’re going to hang them from the ceiling, make a little loop to attach your monofilament onto.  For these I just tied a knot and trimmed the string off later when I glued them onto my banner.  It doesn’t need to be super tight.  I usually pinch it slightly but some people leave them totally flat.  Either way is fine.  You just don’t want the wire or string slipping around.
IMG_1102

Step 5.  Open up each side like a fan.  Then carefully start to separate the layers, pulling these top two together in the center.  Be careful not to rip the paper, but if you rip it a little don’t worry.  No one will notice!
IMG_1103

Once you have them all separated you are done! See, I told you they were easy!  Isn’t it purty?

LUCKY St. Patrick’s Day Banner Tutorial {ReMarkableHome.net}

I’m so excited to show you my new St. Patrick’s Day banner! Yesterday, I neglected my housework and spent the afternoon crafting this.  I am in love with it!  I hope you like it, too!

I didn’t take step by step photos, but I will tell you what you need and give you a few pointers on how to make it.  It was actually really easy.  The only problem with it is that it is too long for my mantle and I had to hang it from the wall on either side of the mantle.  SO, be sure you measure your mantle and don’t make the same mistake I did! You can make the elements smaller to shrink the length a bit.  I will tell you what size mine are and you can go from there.  Okie dokie??

Here is a list of the things I used, but feel free to use what you have on hand.  There’s really no right way to make these.  Just start layering things on!

Simple Solution for a Slimmer Wallet {ReMarkableHome.net}

My wallet gets so full I can’t even snap it sometimes.  I realized this is mostly due to rewards cards and of course too many receipts.  There’s nothing I can do about the receipts but I did decide it was time to get the rewards cards out of my wallet and into my purse.  I saw this brilliant idea on Pinterest awhile back and just decided today was the day to do it.  The pin came from Cooking at Café D.

DRY ERASE CHORE CHART {www.ReMarkableHome.net}

Do your kids do chores?  Do you have a working system?  I find that every working system fails at some point.  I mean, I am always having to come up with fresh new ideas for a chore system.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe when I bring out a new system the kids get excited and try extra hard to keep up with their chores.  Or maybe it’s that I get lazy on follow through after awhile.  I don’t know.  But I do know I need help around the house!  I can’t do all the work myself.  I just don’t have that much energy.  And I also know that my kids need to learn the value of hard work.  I don’t want to be raising a bunch of boys with entitlement issues.

So, when we moved to this house 6 months ago I knew we were going to need a new chore system.  This house is 3 times the size of my old house (it’s my sister’s house that we are living in while her family is serving as mission leaders for our church).  So, I need a lot of help from my kids.

After talking to my younger sister about her chore chart, I decided on this system.  The beauty of it is that the kids are incentivized to get their chores done right away because they get to pick the chores they want to do on a first come, first served basis.  So, if you do your chores first you get to pick the best jobs!

Moist Chocolate Fudge Cake with THIN MINT Frosting {Recipe @ www.ReMarkableHome.net}

Thin Mint Bundt Cake

Last night I went to a ladies’ church function where we share recipes and bring the food to be sampled.  Our theme for the night was chocolate, so I knew I needed to make something with chocolate.  I thought it would be a good idea to kill two birds with one stone and make a St. Patrick’s Day dessert.  I have a fantastic chocolate fudge Bundt cake recipe, so I decided to change it up a bit to make it minty and green.  The result was this Thin Mint Chocolate Fudge Cake......

A LETTER TO MY READERS….

Dear all my wonderful and amazing readers,

You may have noticed I’ve been doing some blog housekeeping around here.  Things are looking a little differently, functioning a little differently.  I hope I am making some things easier for you to navigate to find the topics you’re most interested in!  I really don’t know what I am doing. I just read about something, find a tutorial, and then try to make it work. So, if you notice anything amiss, PLEASE send me an email and let me know.  I will love you forever!

Also, if you subscribe by email or to my feed, you may have noticed I have started including page breaks to my posts.  I hope you can understand my reasoning.  One is that I can put more posts on the first page of my blog and still have it load at a reasonable speed.  Another is that it gets people to click through to my blog more.  I put a lot of time into this blog and I’ve decided it’s time that I start allowing a few ads on my blog so that I can make a little money while doing this.  It’s not all about the money, but I’ve decided it’s a necessary incentive to keep me blogging.  Ads only work when people see them, so that is why it’s important that I have people actually visit my blog to read my posts.  I don’t want to include ads in my feed at this point.  To make you happier, I will always put enough of the post that you will be able to tell if its something you are interested in coming over to read or not. I hope you understand and don’t hate me for doing it! I know it’s a little annoying.

The last thing I want to talk about quickly is commenting.  I get so few comments on this blog that I wonder if anyone is even reading it.  So, if you read a post that you find useful in any way, I would SURE LOVE IT if you would leave me a quick comment.  I don’t even require comment moderation, so its fast and easy!  That way I won’t feel like I am just posting my life to outer space!  Also, if you download a free printable, please leave me a comment.  It makes me feel good! I will do my best to respond to every comment I get in the comment thread.

Thank you so much everyone! I hope you are finding fun and helpful things on my blog to help you create a ReMarkable Home of your own!

All my blogging love,

Emily

SOUTHWEST CHICKEN CHILI {Recipe}

Try Southwest Chicken Chili from ReMarkableHome.net tonight!

I’ve been working hard to get my blog updated and whipped into shape.  Today I worked on updating the “Recipes” tab at the top of my blog.  So far, I’ve gotten all my dessert recipes on there.  I hope to have the rest posted by tomorrow!  Now you know where to look when you want to find a recipe you’ve seen posted here.

Last night I made this chili for dinner.  I’ve made this recipe many times.  It is yummy, filling, and healthy.  Last night we were out of tortilla chips, so I whipped up some homemade tortilla chips.  They are one of my favorite snacks, but.....

Introducing: PINTERESTING TUESDAYS @ ReMarkable Home

12 St. Patrick's Day Wreaths @ ReMarkable-Home.blogspot.com. Come See!

There’s just no way I can create ALL my own content for this blog if I expect to post regularly. I just can’t do it. So, although I don’t want my whole blog to turn into a blog featuring other bloggers, I do want to devote some posts to featuring other bloggers’ content.

I am a Pinterest Junkie! When I am waiting in the carpool line or have a minute to sit down, I love to browse Pinterest on my phone. The amount of ideas on there is just amazing. Sometimes I have to take a break from it because it can be overwhelming. You pin about a million things you want to do and pretty much never get around to doing any of them!

But Pinterest is a great way to find ideas or inspiration for anything and everything. Lately, I’ve been looking for St. Patrick’s Day ideas. I’ve been Googling and Pinning things I find. And I’ve been re-pinning things I see on Pinterest that I like.

So, today I am going to be sharing some St. Patrick’s Day wreaths, because I just adore wreaths and aspire to have one (or ten) for every holiday.

When you click these pictures it will take you to the pin on Pinterest.  Then click the pin and it will take you to the source where you can find tutorials or purchasing info!

I LOVE THE FUN RIBBON ON THIS ONE!

I LOVE THESE FABRIC SCRAP WREATHS. MY OLDEST SON MADE ME ONE WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TEN!…

RELIEF SOCIETY BIRTHDAY PARTY {Super Service Soiree}

Last year I was in charge of our Relief Society Birthday Party.  For those who don’t know, The Relief Society is the largest women’s organization in the world.  It is the women’s organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, of which I am a member.  Every year, we celebrate the organization of the Relief Society with some type of activity/meeting for the women in our ward.  A ward is how our church members are organized into congregations based on geographical locations.

Anyway, I know a lot of ladies are searching the web right about now for ideas for what to do for their activity this year so I wanted to share what we did last year because it was a big success.

Our theme for the night was:

“SOUP”ER SERVICE SOIREE

“Buzz”ily Doing Something Extraordinary

I based that off what Emma Smith said to the sisters at the very first Relief Society meeting…that they would be doing “something extraordinary”.

Here is our invitation made by a friend of mine who is also a fabulous photographer. You can find her on Facebook HERE!

Birthday

So, we had a Bee theme for the main food table, which I did.  I made these cute as heck cupcake toppers that I was in LOVE with and put them on cupcakes topped with a beehive of frosting.  For those who don’t know, the beehive is a symbol of our church standing for hard work and industry.  We had several soups and a delicious salad.  We used beehive water dispensers.

Dazzling Dates for a Year {Printables @ ReMarkableHome.net}

You may have seen these “Year of Dates” ideas floating around the internet.  I decided that was the perfect gift to give my honey this year.  We try to go on a date about once a week, but our dates typically consist of going to dinner and then running errands at Wal-Mart or Target or the grocery store.  Not very glamorous or fun.  I decided it was time for us to spice things up in our dating life and have a lot more FUN!  I scoured the internet for ideas, asked my friends and family on Facebook for ideas, and racked my own brain for ideas that my husband and I would enjoy.  My super creative sister Laura who has an awesome
and Dating Divas were my biggest inspirations.  I warn you some of the dates allude to activities meant for married couples.....

Kids Form Letter {FREE DOWNLOAD}

My kids have a cousin who is serving as a missionary for our church for the next two years.  We want to support him by sending him letters and packages.  I also have a son who lives away from home while attending college.  I want my kids to write to him and keep in touch that way.  And of course we have two sets of grandparents and a great grandmother I would like my kids to correspond with.  We like to use Sundays as a day to write letters.

But, my boys aren’t too good at sitting down and writing a letter to someone.  They have a hard time thinking up what to say.  So, today I decided to make a form letter with prompts to help get them started.  My ten year old just tried it out and really liked it.  I am excited to help my 3 and 6 year olds fill it out and to let my 9 year old use it as well.

I think this will be a great tool to help my kids learn how to write letters!

If you want to download it you can do so HERE.

SCRIPTURE LOVE {Free Printable}

Scripture Valentine FREE Printable @ ReMarkable-Home.blogspot.com
I love Valentine’s Day.  It's not a huge holiday, but it is special to me.  I love that I can just do something small to tell all the special people in my life that I love them!  What is better than a day about love?  I used to not like it so much before I was married and didn’t have a boyfriend to celebrate with.  I wish I had the attitude about it then that I do now.  It’s not so much about lovers as about love.  My husband and I usually forgo an alone date in order to stay home and love on our kids.  We exchange Valentines and have a cheese and chocolate fondue dinner together.  It is fun and our kids look forward to it.  We want them to know they are important to us and that we love them dearly.
My mom always did cute things for us on Valentine’s day.  She would make heart shaped pancakes or waffles with strawberries and whipped cream for breakfast.  She always gave us some type of cute Valentine that she made that always expressed her love to us, and usually came with something sweet.  For dinner she would often make heart shaped English muffin pizzas.  This was long before the days of oodles of ideas via Pinterest or blogging.  She wasn’t a very craft oriented person, so these little things meant a lot and were out of the norm.  My dad always gave us a store bought card, which I loved because we were not a store bought card kind of family.  He also gives us Dove ice cream bars!  Sometimes he gave us cute stuffed animals, too.
All of us girls (there were 7 of us) exchanged Valentine’s with each other, too.  And we still do.  Cousins make Valentine’s for each other and we sisters often make a treat or something for each other’s families.  This year I made this printable that I am sending to all my sisters for Valentine’s day.  And I wanted to share it here with my readers.  I hope you like it!
Go HERE for your FREE DOWNLOAD! PLEASE share this on Pinterest or Facebook if you download it and leave me a comment telling me that you downloaded it.
Thanks!
