I’ve been working hard trying to figure out how to make this summer work.  With all the packing and things I need to do to prepare for our move, I don’t want my kids sitting in front of the TV all day, bored out of their minds.  I REALLY want them to get to have a fun summer, despite the move.

I’ve been looking for ideas and will be compiling some different things to make a fun summer for my kids.  I came across this

 “Do It Yourself Summer Camp” from Power of Moms.

I loved some of their ideas.  I am up in the mountains at my sister’s cabin and I decided to work out our summer plans while I am up here.  Today I came up with theme days for our week days.  I made this cute printable to share with my readers.  I haven’t printed it yet, so if you print it and the colors are awful, please tell me.  I have no printer up here to try it out on.

THE STUPENDOUS SIX SUMMER PLAN {FREE Printable}

So, I’ve got a plan for our mornings with our SUPER SUMMER SCHEDULE. I’ve got a fun READING PROGRAM ready. Now for our afternoons.  I have A LOT to do to get ready to move.  I have to be able to devote a good chunk of time to packing and organizing and fixing things in our house.  I can’t be constantly entertaining bored kids.  Nor do I think that its good for kids to be constantly entertained.  Kids need to have some self directed time.  It is important to me that my kids work on some educational things during the summer.  We haven’t really done this in past summers and I wish we would have.

So, I have come up with the STUPENDOUS SIX, which are six tasks for my kids to do on their own each afternoon while I am working on other things.  My oldest is off on his own now, but my next two sons can do these all on their own.  My five year old will need a little help and my youngest will be napping during this time.

Here they are:

Somehow I have to link these tasks to earning screen time but I’m not exactly sure what I want to do yet.  I am thinking like they can earn ten minutes of screen time per task so they could earn 5 hours for the weekend.  What would you do??

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

One of the BIGGEST, most IMPORTANT things I want to implement this summer is A LOT of daily reading for my kids! I am soooo tired of TV I can’t even tell you. I think the effect of TV, especially TODAY’S programming, on kids is absolutely awful.  When we move, I am thinking of not getting TV hooked up, at least for a good, long while!

Have you heard of How Does She?  It is a site packed full of fun ideas. If you sign up for their email list they will send you passwords to be able to download some of their fun printables.

I recently got an email from them containing a password for printables for a

 Summer Reading Program!

It is super cute and I think it will be so fun for my kids! You can read all about the program HERE

I am hoping they will add a blank bingo board so we can fill in our own ideas for places for our kids to read.  If you like that idea, I hope you will ask them to do it for us!

SUMMER TO-DO LIST {Summer}

I posted this last summer, but thought it would be fun to re-post for the newcomers to ReMarkable Home.  Hope you like it!

We have a wall in our stairwell.  Years ago we followed a tradition of my husband’s family and created a picture wall on that blank space.  The picture wall was just hundreds of snapshots stapled to the wall so that they overlapped.  There were a few enlargements as well.  We would put up pictures of our friends and family and cute shots of our kid or pictures of memorable events.  It was fun.  But I got tired of it having no rhyme or reason.

So, I decided the pictures needed a frame to go in.  So, down came the pictures.  I got some molding to make a frame, but was too afraid to attempt it on my own.  So, maybe a year later my younger sister Jennifer, who is very handy and knows how to build things, came into town and helped me get the frame up.  After that I just needed to fill the nail holes and paint it and then re-hang the pictures.  Well, 4 or 5 years later I still haven’t gotten it done!  This is the story of my life.  We lived without a sink in our downstairs bathroom for about 4 years because it took me that long to complete the project of a vessel sink made from a bowl on a little antique dresser.

Anyway, since I never painted the frame and put the pictures back up, this space has been used for some different things.  Currently, it is housing our SUMMER TO-DO LIST, which is the main topic of this post!  Here it is!

I cut 12x12 paper (this is from Wal-Mart) into quarters so I had 6x6 squares.  Then I made 4x4 squares with the activities printed in them.  I used 8 different fonts.  I attached the white squares to the scrapbook paper squares with double stick tape.  Originally I was going to do a banner with these, but I got a little carried away and made close to 80 squares!  So, the banner would have been longer than my house!  So, instead, I used sticky tack to put these up in my frame.  They make it look must more cheerful!  Don’t mind the old paint.  There is also a hole one of my precious boys kicked in the wall when he was mad!  Aren’t kids so fun???!!!

Now, I want you to know this is not perfect.  Nothing I do ever is!  Do they fit in the frame perfectly??  NO.  Are the squares perfectly square?  NO.  Did my printer cut off the border on some of the squares?  YES.  Do I dislike one of the fonts I chose?  YES.  But, since I am fighting perfectionism I just let all of these things be.  It doesn’t change the fact that we are going to have a super fun summer!  My kids are VERY excited about all these activities.  I am hoping it keeps them from being complete couch potatoes this summer.  But, I must admit I am worried I will not be able to keep up with this plan!!!

For those who might like to see my list more clearly, here it is!  ALSO, we will be needing friends to accompany us in some of these activities.  So I hope some of my Vegas friends will let me know what they would like to do with us!

TRAMPOLINE FORT {Sewing}

A couple years ago I got a crazy idea to make a skirt for out trampoline that would transform the trampoline into a fort for my boys.  It is quite a simple thing to do and took me only one afternoon to complete. 

I simply measured the circumference of the trampoline to figure out how many yards of fabric I would need.  I added a few inches so that it would overlap at the door.  I then measured the distance from the ground to just under the bar to know how tall the skirt should be.  I think I had to trim the fabric down as it was too wide.  I hemmed the top and left the selvedge edge on the bottom.  I got this denim fabric at Walmart for pretty cheap.  It is perfect for being outdoors. 

I used cotton twill tape for the ties.  I just folded a piece in half and used my sewing machine to sew it to the skirt.  I put a tie about every 2 to 3 feet.  I sewed in a square with an x in it pattern to make sure the ties would not come loose. {see pictures}  I used extra pieces of fabric to sew on some big pockets inside so the kids could put their gear in them, i.e. snacks, papers, flashlights, whatever they take into the tent.

I made a pleat in this pocket so it would hold extra big things, if needed.

We will often squirt the tent with water to help it be a little cooler inside.  I also let the kids use sidewalk chalk to write on the inside or outside of the fort.  The white stitching you see is from one of the pockets.  I wasn’t too concerned about the appearance, but you could use matching thread if you didn’t want the stitching to show.

I would like to make a cover to go over the top so that it will feel even more enclosed.  It is so simple yet so fun!  If you live where you need to sprinkler your grass daily, make sure to lift the skirt up onto the trampoline at night so your grass will get watered.

If you don’t have a trampoline you could make a similar cover for an outdoor (or indoor) table.  Instead of ties just make a top panel that the sides are sewn to, like a fitted tablecloth.

PATRIOTIC BERRIES {Recipe}

I am sure you have all seen these already, but just in case someone has had their head in the sand I thought I would post these cute strawberries I made last year.  I actually made them for my 3 year olds birthday party because he LOVES red, white, and blue.  He also loved dinosaurs at the time so we had a red, white, and blue dinosaur party.

To make these, just wash your strawberries and allow them to dry on a towel.  Once dry, dip them in melted white chocolate chips or candy melts, then directly into a bowl of blue sprinkles.  These are not only cute and festive but they are super yummy!  You can do it with any combo of colors, as long as red fits in with your decor!

Here are a couple other pics from that birthday party last year.  It was a super easy, simple one at the park.  The kids had a great time!
